Why you should take this course:

The revised National Curriculum has provided an opportunity to improve pupil’s literacy through science.   This course will provide delegates with the opportunity to explore ways to introduce science concepts and techniques.  The course will support science and literacy teachers wishing to gain more knowledge of using science experiments, concepts and languages to improve literacy grades.  It will also provide examples of science-based ideas for use in literacy sessions.

The course is applicable to all science schemes but is based on the principles of the Engaging Science scheme of work.   There will be an emphasis on practical approaches to science and a strong emphasis on supporting literacy through science.

Course Aims:

  • to explore ways in which the teaching of science can support the development of literacy skills
  • to explore science concepts for the teaching of literacy

Course outcome:

  • By the end of this course participants will have a greater understanding of the way science teaching and literacy teaching can support and reinforce each other and will have some ideas for linking the two subjects both in science and in literacy lessons.

Target Audience:

The course is aimed at primary science or literacy leaders, Key Stage 1 and 2 leaders, all teaching staff
